CAHRE Conference 2026

On 8 and 9 September, AUT Migrant and Refugee Health Research Centre (MRHRC) members attended and presented at the Centre for Asian and Ethnic Minority Health Research and Evaluation (CAHRE) Conference, held at the University of Auckland’s Grafton campus.

The following presentations were delivered by MRHRC academic staff and postgraduate students:

• "We are not others, we are us with them”: Strengthening pandemic preparedness for communities with migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking backgrounds in Aotearoa New Zealand (Nadia Charania) -  Received Best Presentation Award.
• A rapid review of the theories, models, and frameworks used to understand vaccinations among migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking populations (Karolina Sobeczek, Avwerosuoghene Onobrakpeya, Gilla Shapiro, Catherine King, Ikram Abdi, Abela Marimba, Julie Leask, and Nadia Charania).

• Context matters: Understanding pre- and post-migration influences on physical activity and sedentary behaviour among Indian migrants in Australia - implications for policy (Siona Fernandes and Eleanor Holroyd).
• “I’m just not part of the furniture sitting there and dying away”: Transnational ageing and belonging among older Indian migrants in Aotearoa New Zealand (Jayanthi Nagalingam, Eleanor Holroyd, and Kay Shannon) -  Received Best Presentation Award.
• Older Fijian Indian migrants’ access to primary healthcare services (Vimlesh Shukla, Eleanor Holroyd, and Jagamaya Shrestha-Ranjit).
• Older Chinese late-life migrants’ access to health services in Aotearoa New Zealand (Sherry Zhu, Eleanor Holroyd, and Irene Wong).
